Red Robin, a chain of casual dining restaurants, noticed there was no formal management training for ambitious employees and sought to create a formal career path to salaried management.
It created the Shift Supervisor Training Program to help team members take their first step into management. This program allowed the company to mend the skills gap and give any ambitious employee the tools and skills necessary to manage. It also allowed general managers to fill in gaps quicker than before, facilitating the promotion process.
The initiative was developed and tested from March to May of 2015, and in the next three years it is projected to save Red Robin $1.5 million in training costs.
For creating a formal time-saving and money-saving way to create management-ready employees, Red Robin is the silver 2015 Optimas Award winner for Training.
